WebP is already an efficient format, so the JPG you export will usually be a bit larger than the WebP — that's the price of universal compatibility. Here's the size/quality tradeoff we measured, encoded exactly how this tool encodes. For web images, quality 85–90 keeps them crisp without bloating the file.

Fidelity is SSIM vs. the original (1.000 = identical). Measured on real photos with 4:2:0 chroma — the same encoding this tool uses. Absolute sizes scale with resolution.
Quality 100 is a trap
Jumping 90→100 roughly triples the file for a fidelity gain almost no one can see.
85–92 is the sweet spot
Near-indistinguishable from the original at about a third of the maximum size.
Expect ~2.5–3.5 MB
For a typical 12 MP phone photo saved as a high-quality JPG.
WebP comes in two flavors. Lossy WebP is like JPG; lossless WebP is like PNG (great for graphics). Either way the output JPG is lossy — perfect for photos, less ideal for sharp-edged logos.
A transparent WebP flattened to JPG needs a background. Pick the fill color in the tool — white suits most cases, but match it to your page background to avoid a visible box.
Animated WebP → a single still JPG (first frame). Convert to GIF or MP4 if you need to keep the motion.
Decoding and re-encoding happen in your browser — the file is never uploaded, so there's no size cap and nothing to leak.

Why it happens
JPG has no transparency, so the alpha channel was filled with the default white background.
The fix
Re-run it and set the fill color to match where you'll place the image — or convert to PNG instead if you must keep transparency.
My animated WebP lost its animation
Why it happens
JPG is a single still image and can't hold frames.
The fix
That's expected — the first frame is kept. Use a GIF or MP4 converter if you need the motion.
The JPG came out bigger than the WebP
Why it happens
WebP compresses more efficiently than JPG, so equal quality means a larger JPG.
The fix
Lower the quality slider — 85 usually matches WebP's visual quality at a reasonable size. Watch the live size readout.

WebP is Google's web image format — typically 25-35% smaller than an equivalent JPG. That's great for websites but awkward everywhere else: older editors, some print services, and legacy software can't open it. Converting to JPG makes the image open literally everywhere.
