AVIF is one of the most efficient formats around, so the JPG you get will typically be noticeably larger — that's the cost of universal compatibility. Here's the size/quality tradeoff we measured with this tool's exact encoding. Quality 90 keeps photos indistinguishable from the source at about a third of a maxed-out export.

Fidelity is SSIM vs. the original (1.000 = identical). Measured on real photos with 4:2:0 chroma — the same encoding this tool uses. Absolute sizes scale with resolution.
Quality 100 is a trap
Jumping 90→100 roughly triples the file for a fidelity gain almost no one can see.
85–92 is the sweet spot
Near-indistinguishable from the original at about a third of the maximum size.
Expect ~2.5–3.5 MB
For a typical 12 MP phone photo saved as a high-quality JPG.
AVIF can store 10-bit and HDR; JPG is 8-bit SDR. Standard images convert cleanly, but true HDR shots lose their extra range and wide gradients may band slightly.
The tool relies on your browser to decode AVIF. Any current Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari 16+ works; ancient browsers won't.
Alpha areas get your chosen fill color, since JPG can't store transparency. Keep it as PNG if transparency matters.

The tool couldn't read my AVIF file
Why it happens
Your browser is too old to decode AVIF, or the file isn't a valid AVIF.
The fix
Open this page in an up-to-date Chrome or Firefox. If it still fails, the file may be corrupt or a different format.
The photo looks flatter / less vivid after converting
Why it happens
The source was an HDR AVIF, and JPG can only store standard 8-bit SDR color.
The fix
Expected — there's no way to keep HDR in a JPG. Keep the AVIF if you need the full dynamic range.
The JPG is much larger than the AVIF
Why it happens
AVIF is far more efficient than JPG, so matching its quality means a bigger JPG.
The fix
Drop the quality slider toward 85 and watch the live size — you'll usually match the look at a fraction of the max size.
