Every HEIC → JPG conversion re-compresses the photo once, so the setting you choose matters. We measured the size/quality tradeoff on real photographs, encoded the exact way this tool encodes. The short version: quality 90 is the sweet spot for iPhone photos — visually indistinguishable from the original at roughly a third the size of a maxed-out export.

Fidelity is SSIM vs. the original (1.000 = identical). Measured on real photos with 4:2:0 chroma — the same encoding this tool uses. Absolute sizes scale with resolution.
Quality 100 is a trap
Jumping 90→100 roughly triples the file for a fidelity gain almost no one can see.
85–92 is the sweet spot
Near-indistinguishable from the original at about a third of the maximum size.
Expect ~2.5–3.5 MB
For a typical 12 MP phone photo saved as a high-quality JPG.
A HEIC file is more than a single flat photo. It's a HEIF container wrapping an image coded with HEVC (H.265), and it can carry extra data that a plain JPG simply can't hold. Knowing what converts cleanly — and what doesn't — saves you a nasty surprise later.
A Live Photo is a HEIC still paired with a short .MOV. Converting keeps only the frozen frame — the motion and sound don't carry into a JPG.
Portrait shots embed a depth map so you can re-edit the background blur. JPG has nowhere to store it, so that adjustability is gone once you convert.
HEIC supports 10-bit color and HDR gain maps; JPG is 8-bit SDR. Genuinely HDR shots lose their extra headroom, and wide gradients like skies can show faint banding.
iPhones shoot in the wide Display P3 gamut. Convert without color management and colors look washed-out — this tool draws through a managed canvas so standard photos stay accurate.
Windows can't even preview HEIC until you install Microsoft's HEVC Video Extensions — the free “from Device Manufacturer” variant, or the $0.99 one in the Store. That's the whole reason HEIC feels broken on a PC. Converting to JPG here skips the codec entirely: your file becomes a JPG that Photos, Paint, and Office open instantly.
Open the HEIC in Preview, then File → Export and choose JPEG. Handy for one file; for a batch, the converter above is faster and gives you a live size readout Preview doesn't.
To stop shooting HEIC in the first place: Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible saves new photos as JPG. For photos you already have, AirDrop to a Mac auto-converts, or just use this page in your phone's browser.
My converted file still won't open / still says HEIC
Why it happens
Some converters just rename the file — they change .heic to .jpg without actually re-encoding it, so it's still HEIC data inside.
The fix
This tool genuinely decodes the HEVC image and re-encodes real JPEG bytes, so the output opens everywhere. If a file ever fails, it wasn't a valid HEIC to begin with.
The photo came out sideways
Why it happens
HEIC stores rotation as an EXIF orientation flag. Converters that ignore it output the raw sensor orientation — often rotated 90°.
The fix
The converter reads the orientation flag and bakes the correct rotation into the JPG, so what you see is what you get.
Colors look washed-out or the photo lost its "pop"
Why it happens
The source was wide-gamut Display P3 or an HDR photo, and a naive converter mishandled the color profile or dropped the HDR gain map.
The fix
Standard photos are color-managed here and come out accurate. Truly HDR shots will look flatter because JPG can't store HDR — that's a format limit, not a bug.
